About Jared Hatcliffe
Professor Jared Hatcliffe brings nearly three decades of courtroom experience to the classroom. He spent his career with the New York City Law Department, rising to Senior Trial Counsel and trying hundreds of cases in state and federal courts. His cases included allegations of police misconduct and excessive force, including shootings and taser use, as well as civil rights violations, employment discrimination, medical malpractice, negligent design, premises liability, and automobile liability. Many involved catastrophic injury and wrongful death damages.
Professor Hatcliffe is now a Senior Trial Attorney at Cohen & Cohen Personal Injury Lawyers, P.C. His practice focuses on catastrophic injury cases, including medical malpractice, construction accidents, premises liability, employment discrimination, municipal liability, and automobile accidents. He represents clients at every stage, from settlement and mediation through arbitration and trial. His years on the defense side give him a detailed understanding of how insurers and government entities evaluate risk and defend claims, and he now brings that perspective to the plaintiff’s side.
At the Elisabeth Haub School of Law, Professor Hatcliffe is the Associate Director of the Advocacy Program. Graduating classes have voted him the Barbara C. Salken Outstanding Adjunct Professor of the Year three times (2021–2022, 2023–2024, and 2024–2025), and in 2022 he received the Loretta Musial Service Award from the Pace Trial Advocacy Department. He has also taught at Stetson University College of Law, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Pace University’s Paralegal Certificate Program, and the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, and has lectured at the University of Oxford. He also served as a moderator and instructor for the Law Department Tort Division’s in-house trial training program.
He is the author of Trial Advocacy: The Art of Storytelling – Strategies for Winning a Trial in New York State Court (Carolina Academic Press, 2022) and co-author, with Morse and Gorman, of the third edition of New York Criminal Procedure: An Analytical Approach (2022). He is the founder and manager of The Advocate’s Advantage, Pace Haub Law’s official Trial Advocacy Program blog.
